JAKARTA-AN AMMUNITION warehouse belonging to the navy exploded in North Jakarta yesterday, killing one marine and wounding another 86 people, mostly marines, according to the military.

The warehouse storing ammunition for long and short rifles exploded at 10.30am Jakarta time, Indonesian military spokesman Iskandar Sitompul said.

The spokesman earlier said 24 people were injured.

“The latest report is that 87 people are affected. One died and 72 have been rushed to hospitals,” Sitompul told a press conference at the Marine Hospital of Mitoharjo in Jakarta.

Most of the victims have been rushed to the hospital, most suffering from burns and broken bones, according to an official of the hospital.

The spokesman rebuffed the rumor of sabotage, saying that a short-circuit could be the trigger of the explosion.

The victims suffering from serious injuries are treated at the marine hospital and those having minor wounds are at the Medical Port Hospital at the Tanjung Priok sea port in North Jakarta.

“An investigation team has been established and now they are on the scene to investigate the accident,” he said.
